Being held

How ruthless our inner critic can be. Vicious, even.
When a woman finds herself overjoyed at receiving a compliment and her inner critic weighs in, finding her ridiculous in her excitement.
When we have had so little love and affection as a child, then we are starved for care.

Realising how starved we have been, how malnourished, is a signal to embrace that child in us who is so longing to be held.
Not to upbraid her for her all too human needs.

If we can hold ourselves in this gentleness then the child in us can learn to express joy. And grief for all the pain that this growing up has required.
